Brazil Bans X and Musk Got Angry

A Brazilian Supreme Court judge, Alexandre de Moraes, ordered the suspension of Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), early Saturday due to a dispute over disinformation. The action came after Musk failed to appoint a new legal representative as required. Users in Brazil experienced access issues and saw messages instructing them to reload their browsers.

Musk responded angrily, calling Moraes an “evil dictator cosplaying as a judge” and accusing him of undermining democracy in Brazil. He argued that free speech is crucial to democracy and claimed Moraes was acting for political purposes.

The suspension is part of a broader conflict between Musk and Brazilian authorities, who have been combating disinformation, particularly related to the 2022 election and former president Jair Bolsonaro. Moraes had previously ordered the removal of X accounts linked to Bolsonaro’s supporters and threatened a fine for using VPNs to bypass the block.

Musk’s Starlink faced a financial freeze in Brazil after Moraes’ orders, with Starlink arguing the fines were unjust. Musk’s actions and statements have intensified tensions, highlighting his contentious relationship with Brazilian legal and political authorities.
