A broader network of corruption in army procurement tenders

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is intensifying its probe into alleged corruption in Malaysian Army procurement tenders, uncovering signs of a broader network involving senior officers.

A senior army officer in his 50s is expected to provide a statement soon regarding suspected irregularities in procurement processes.

“MACC is also detecting the involvement of several other officers, thus showing that there is a wider network of corruption in their procurement,” the source told the Malay-language daily Berita Harian yesterday (Jan 9).

The report also said the MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki has confirmed that investigations extend to other senior armed forces officials.

A formal probe has been opened under relevant sections of the MACC Act 2009, which addresses bribery offences carrying severe penalties, including up to 20 years’ imprisonment and substantial fines.

“I ask all parties to give the authorities space to conduct a thorough investigation and not to make any speculation that could affect the investigation process,” he said.

Port Dickson Bersatu chief Badrul Hisham Shaharin’s complaint, based on anonymous documents showing large monthly cash inflows to a senior army officer’s family accounts, triggered an MACC probe into alleged corruption in army procurement tenders.

This led to former army chief Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan’s appointment as armed forces chief being halted, his placement on leave (Dec 27, 2025), the freezing of six family bank accounts (Dec 29), and his arrest along with his two wives in early January 2026 for remand.

The case involves suspected bribery and cartel activities. — Jan 10, 2026
