JOHOR BARU: The Cabinet has approved the RM10bil Elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (E-ART) project aimed at addressing worsening traffic congestion in Johor Baru, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
Speaking at the Pakatan Harapan Convention on Sunday, Loke said the federal government required time to carefully evaluate the project due to the large financial commitment involved.
“The Cabinet has just approved the RM10bil project. Some have said we are slow, but of course, we need time to review it. The amount involved is not small,” he said.
Loke added that interim measures are also being prepared to manage the expected increase in traffic congestion once the Rapid Transit System Link begins operations next year.
Previously, Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi warned that delays in implementing the E-ART system could further worsen congestion in Johor Baru. The project was first proposed nearly two years ago to help disperse traffic flow across the city.
The RTS Link, scheduled to commence operations in January 2027, is expected to transport up to 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction between Bukit Chagar in Johor and Woodlands North in Singapore. The journey is expected to take approximately five minutes, significantly improving cross-border connectivity between Malaysia and Singapore.
