China Urges Citizens to Avoid Japan as Taiwan Tensions Escalate
China has advised its citizens to avoid travelling to Japan as diplomatic friction between the two countries intensifies over remarks made about Taiwan. The advisory follows a sharp escalation in rhetoric after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told parliament that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could constitute a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan, opening the door to potential military involvement.
Beijing condemned the statement, with state media accusing Takaichi of crossing a diplomatic red line. China’s defence ministry warned that Japan would face “crushing defeat” should it intervene in what Beijing considers an internal matter.
The travel warning marks the latest sign of deteriorating ties. Analysts say it reflects both domestic political signalling and an effort to pressure Tokyo economically, given Japan’s heavy reliance on inbound tourism, including from China.
The dispute underscores the rising volatility in the region, where the Taiwan Strait remains a central flashpoint. Both governments are expected to continue public messaging as they test the boundaries of each other’s resolve.
