Chinese Man to Be Charged in Singapore for Alleged Theft on Dubai Flight

Chinese man charged in Singapore for alleged in-flight theft from Dubai passenger; wife caught act, police stress vigilance and prevention.

A 25-year-old Chinese man is set to be charged in Singapore today for allegedly stealing from a sleeping passenger on a Dubai–Singapore flight. The incident occurred in business class when the victim’s wife noticed him taking a bag from the overhead compartment. She confronted the suspect, who returned the bag. Authorities arrested him after landing when he failed to give a satisfactory explanation. If convicted, he faces up to three years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.

How Singapore tackles onboard theft:

Singapore takes theft on board aircraft very seriously and employs a multi-pronged approach to deter and respond to such incidents. Airport Police Division (APD) swiftly investigates these cases—with frequent reliance on on-board witnesses, CCTV, and collaboration with airlines to identify and arrest suspects upon landing  . Under the Tokyo Convention Act, such thefts—whether on Singapore-registered or foreign-registered aircraft landing here—can be prosecuted locally, though prosecution depends on the Attorney-General’s Chambers’ consent  . Airlines like Singapore Airlines also train their cabin crew to be vigilant, encouraging passengers to keep valuables with them, monitor overhead compartments, and report suspicious activity immediately
