The Cisco 2024 AI Readiness Index highlights a minor improvement in Malaysia’s readiness for AI, with only 14% of organizations fully prepared to deploy AI technologies, up from 13% last year. This incremental progress points to persistent challenges that companies face in fully adopting AI, a gap deemed “critical” due to the anticipated transformative impact of AI on business operations.
The index, based on a survey of 3,660 senior leaders across the APJC region, measures AI readiness across six areas: strategy, infrastructure, data, governance, talent, and culture. The survey found that AI is increasingly central to business strategy in Malaysia, with 98% of companies indicating a heightened urgency for AI adoption over the past year, spurred by CEO and leadership interest. Currently, 55% of Malaysian firms allocate 10-30% of their IT budget to AI, focusing on key areas like cybersecurity, IT infrastructure, and data management.
However, despite these investments, many organizations report underwhelming returns on AI spending. Cisco Malaysia’s managing director, Hana Raja, emphasized that achieving effective AI deployment requires a modern infrastructure that supports growing power and latency demands. Additionally, Anupam Trehan, Cisco’s VP for people and communities, noted a talent shortage as a major barrier, stressing the need for collaboration between private and public sectors to build AI talent in Malaysia.
