EFS Group Advances Firm Solar Power for Malaysia’s Data Centre Future

EFS Group is developing a firm solar and battery storage project in Sarawak, supporting Malaysia’s rising data centre electricity demand while strengthening renewable energy and energy resilience nationwide.

EFS Group Powers Sustainability

EFS Group is strengthening Malaysia’s push towards a sustainable digital economy through its role in the RM2.32 billion Baram DeepTech Energy Programme, which combines renewable energy with battery storage to support the country’s growing data centre industry.

The initiative comes as Malaysia prepares for a sharp rise in electricity demand from data centres. Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof recently said the sector could require up to 7.7 gigawatts (GW) of electricity by 2030.

Current consumption stands at 1,102 megawatts (MW), representing only 54 per cent of the 2,050MW already approved, suggesting substantial growth remains ahead.

EFS Group views the gap as an opportunity for developers to establish reliable power infrastructure before demand reaches its projected peak. The company believes round-the-clock renewable energy will become increasingly important as operators seek dependable, low-carbon electricity supplies.

Last year, EFS Group signed a Heads of Agreement with Planet QEOS Sdn Bhd to jointly develop Malaysia’s first firm solar power plant under the Baram DeepTech Energy Programme. As Planet QEOS’ Agrovoltaic and Food Security Partner, EFS Group is developing a 155-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar farm integrated with a 310-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The project also includes a 650-hectare agrovoltaic farm in the Baram highlands of northern Sarawak, combining clean energy generation with agricultural activities.

The integrated approach is expected to strengthen energy resilience while supporting food production, reinforcing Malaysia’s ambitions to expand renewable energy capacity alongside its rapidly growing digital infrastructure.
