TikTok Shop Malaysia Sees 100% Sales Surge for MSMEs in Ramadan-Raya 2025 Campaign
PUTRAJAYA, Sept 25 — All social media platforms in Malaysia will soon be required to adopt electronic Know-Your-Customer (eKYC) verification using government-issued documents, including MyKad, passports and MyDigital ID. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the measure aims to reduce online fraud, prevent underage users from opening accounts, and strengthen digital safety.
“For now, we are encouraging it, but once the Online Safety Act comes into effect by early next year, it will be mandatory,” Fahmi said during the ministry’s monthly assembly yesterday.
He revealed that major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Telegram and TikTok currently lack robust eKYC systems. Authorities will also meet with Meta and TikTok in Singapore within two weeks to discuss compliance, alongside curbing sales of prohibited goods, including drug-laced vape liquids, on social platforms. The government stressed its firm commitment to protect Malaysians from scams, gambling and online crimes.
