Expand AI Access in Malaysia Through Budget

The Malaysian government will prioritize artificial intelligence (AI) development in the upcoming 2027 Budget, focusing on expanding access and building infrastructure to support adoption across sectors. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said the initiative, tied to the recently launched AI Malaysia, will require significant funding to mobilize expertise and strengthen national AI capabilities.

Gobind emphasized that beyond technical experts, Malaysia must invest in infrastructure capable of supporting widespread AI use. He noted that high costs remain a barrier, particularly for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and pledged to explore systems that make AI tools more affordable and accessible.

“We need to look at how technology can help small traders, particularly MSMEs. This is something I will also focus on,” he said.

The minister added that while awareness of AI’s benefits is growing among businesses and the public, affordability is key to ensuring inclusive adoption. Details of the initiatives will be revealed when the budget is tabled in October.

Gobind made the remarks at the Petaling Jaya Startup Festival 2026, which featured 100 booths and attracted around 2,000 participants. He said the event reflects Malaysia’s growing startup ecosystem, providing opportunities for investors to discover new talent and innovative businesses.
