FBM KLCI Recovery Remains Fragile Amid Weak Market Breadth and Foreign Outflows

FBM KLCI rebounded slightly but weak breadth, foreign outflows and fragile sentiment continue to threaten market recovery prospects.

The FBM KLCI posted a modest recovery on Tuesday, rising 0.24% to close at 1,599.58, but remained below the key 1,600 psychological level as market sentiment stayed cautious. Despite the benchmark index’s gains, overall market breadth remained weak, with decliners significantly outnumbering gainers, reflecting persistent risk aversion among investors.

Healthcare, Telecommunications & Media, and Financial Services stocks led gains, helping to support the index. However, losses in Technology, Construction and Plantation counters capped broader market advances. The continued weakness in technology shares mirrored regional trends amid concerns over the sustainability of global artificial intelligence-related investments.

FBM KLCI rebounds

Market sentiment may receive some support from the mixed but generally positive performance on Wall Street overnight. Easing U.S. Treasury yields and a retreat in oil prices could also help reduce concerns over inflation and borrowing costs. Nevertheless, geopolitical uncertainties and persistent weakness in regional technology shares remain key risks to investor confidence.

Domestically, foreign fund outflows continue to weigh on sentiment despite Malaysia’s resilient economic fundamentals. The recent pullback below 1,600 may encourage selective bargain hunting in fundamentally strong companies offering attractive valuations and dividend yields, although investors remain cautious.

Technically, the FBM KLCI’s rebound suggests selling pressure may be easing after the recent correction. Immediate support levels are seen at 1,580 and 1,560, while resistance is located between 1,610 and 1,630. A sustained move above 1,650 would be required to signal a stronger recovery trend. Until then, market performance is expected to remain volatile and largely dependent on foreign fund flows and overall market participation.
