California is set to deploy generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools to address various public service needs.
Under new agreements announced by Governor Gavin Newsom, the state will collaborate with five companies to create GenAI tools using technologies developed by tech giants like Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google-backed Anthropic.
These tools aim to reduce traffic congestion, enhance road safety, and provide tax guidance. The state’s goal is to leverage AI for better public services, positioning California as an AI leader.
During a six-month internal trial, state workers will evaluate the proposed tools, which are considered low risk and do not interact with confidential data or personal information1.
“It is a very good sign that a lot of these companies are putting their focus on using GenAI for governmental service delivery,” said Amy Tong, secretary of government operations for California.
