Palliative Care
UALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 — As Hospis Malaysia marks its 10th Voices for Hospices Gala Dinner, the nation’s leading palliative care organisation is renewing its call to make palliative care a standard part of Malaysia’s healthcare system.
Despite an estimated 100,000 Malaysians needing such care each year, only one in ten currently receive it — a gap expected to widen as the population ages.
Chairman Dato’ Kathleen Chew stressed that palliative care “is not optional healthcare, but essential care,” ensuring dignity and comfort for patients and families. Chief Executive Officer Dr Ednin Hamzah added that palliative care “restores quality to the time people have, however long that may be.”
Themed “A Promise of Dignity, United in Care,” the gala will raise funds to expand Hospis Malaysia’s community-based services and training programmes for healthcare professionals.
