Can Malaysia reclaim the 'Asian Tiger' status? Here's another view
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim dismissed claims that Malaysia could become an “Asian Tiger” economy, criticizing systemic issues in leadership, governance, and outdated policies. Responding to Bersatu MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal’s optimism about achieving such status with visionary leadership, Zaid expressed disappointment in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s reluctance to reform entrenched systems.
He highlighted corruption, archaic education, and economic policies, likening Malaysia to a “feudal oligarchy” and a “better version of Pakistan” rather than a peer to China or Singapore. Wan Fayhsal, however, urged policy recalibration and long-term reform. Zaid wrote, “Stop comparing us with the real tigers.”
