Malaysia’s EV Sales Surge Past 46,000 in 2024, NAP 2020 Under Mid-Term Review

KUALA LUMPUR – Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Malaysia, including hybrids and battery electric vehicles (BEVs), rose to 46,403 units in 2024, up from 35,723 units the previous year, Parliament was told on Aug 18.

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said the increase, particularly in BEVs, was supported by the expansion of charging infrastructure nationwide.

He added that overall new car sales reached 816,747 units in 2024, surpassing the 800,000 mark for the first time. “This places Malaysia second in Asean for the passenger vehicle market, reflecting user confidence and strengthening local vendor participation,” he noted.

Liew also said the National Automotive Policy (NAP) 2020 is undergoing a mid-term review to align with global technological developments. “The main goal is to make Malaysia a regional automotive hub based on technology and innovation,” he stressed.
