Malaysia and Japan Discuss U.S. Tariffs, Energy Cooperation

On April 16, 2025, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a phone call with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to discuss pressing international and regional issues, including the economic impact of U.S.-imposed tariffs. Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s concerns and its coordination with ASEAN to negotiate with the U.S. The leaders also explored enhanced bilateral cooperation in energy, particularly hydrogen development involving Petronas and Sarawak, and Japan’s interest in the ASEAN Power Grid.

“During the same conversation, we also touched on the progress of Malaysia–Japan bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas such as new energy development, including hydrogen initiatives involving Petronas and the Sarawak State Government,” Anwar said.
