MATRADE Partners with Amazon to Boost Malaysian SMEs Globally

MATRADE, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation, and Amazon Global Selling have announced a year-long collaboration aimed at enhancing cross-border e-commerce capabilities for Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The partnership responds to the increasing demand from Malaysian businesses to expand their reach globally. Throughout 2024, both organizations will conduct quarterly outreach events to raise awareness of cross-border e-commerce opportunities and assist Malaysian brand owners in establishing their presence on Amazon’s e-stores. These efforts aim to introduce more Malaysian brands and products to customers in the United States.

The collaboration involves offline events in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Johor Bahru, featuring in-person workshops to provide valuable insights and guidance to local entrepreneurs.

Additionally, online engagements will offer tailored training and content to equip Malaysian sellers with the necessary tools for success on the global stage. The course contents will cover various aspects of the selling journey, including account registration, product preparation, compliance, listing, shipping, advertising, and more.

According to insights from the Access Partnership report of 2023, Malaysia’s e-commerce export value is projected to surge at an annual rate of 14%, reaching an estimated MYR36.2 billion (USD8.6 billion) by 2027. This forecast underscores the significant potential for Malaysian businesses to expand their international footprint.

Matrade: Deal with Amazon

Datuk Mohd. Mustafa Abdul Aziz, Chief Executive Officer at MATRADE, expressed enthusiasm for the strategic partnership with the e-commerce platform, emphasizing the importance of equipping Malaysian SMEs with the knowledge and resources to thrive in cross-border e-commerce.

He highlighted the alignment of this initiative with Malaysia’s economic growth strategies, including the MADANI Economy Framework, the National Trade Blueprint (NTBp), and the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030.

Anand Palit, Head of Amazon Global Selling in Southeast Asia, emphasized the promising outlook for Malaysia’s e-commerce export sector and expressed appreciation for the collaboration with MATRADE. Amazon Global Selling aims to support Malaysian brand owners in kickstarting their global selling journey by leveraging its expertise, resources, and infrastructure.

Amazon’s global presence spans 22 countries, enabling sellers to reach over 200 countries and territories worldwide. Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) facilitates scalability for sellers by handling product picking, shipping, customer service, and returns. A dedicated team based in Singapore will introduce Amazon’s tools and resources to Malaysian sellers, organizing workshops and events to foster market awareness and facilitate cross-border e-commerce initiatives.

Marketing Director Alisha Tan shared their transformative journey, highlighting the adoption of FBA and their plans to expand presence to Amazon Canada, UK, and Germany in 2024.
