MySTS: Malaysia Committed to International Security and Stopping WMD

The Malaysia Strategic Trade Summit 2023 (MySTS) held in Kuala Lumpur on October 23, 2023, signified Malaysia’s unwavering commitment to international security and the prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction proliferation.

The event was inaugurated by Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Aziz, the Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry.

MySTS and UNSCR

MySTS 2023 underscored Malaysia’s dedication to fulfilling international security obligations, particularly in line with the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540 (UNSCR 1540). Malaysia has maintained a strong Strategic Trade Management (STM) ecosystem for over a decade, anchored in the Strategic Trade Act of 2010 (STA 2010). This legislation has played a pivotal role in the Malaysian Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry’s efforts to harmonize economic development and security.

The summit featured several program highlights, including the Industry Outreach on Strategic Trade (IOST), the 2nd Annual Women in Strategic Trade Forum (WiST), and the 3rd Southeast Asia Forum on Export Control (SEAFEC). These programs aimed to educate businesses and industries on supply chain sustainability and security, promote women’s empowerment in STM, and foster regional dialogue on STM harmonization in ASEAN countries.

The event also saw the inaugural Women in Strategic Trade (WiST) Honours Pioneer Award Ceremony, acknowledging the contributions of women professionals in spearheading STM efforts. This recognition is expected to inspire more women to engage in various aspects of strategic trade management.

MYSTCC and PPP

Minister Zafrul Aziz highlighted the establishment of the Malaysia Strategic Trade Control Community (MYSTCC), a public-private partnership initiative that connects the corporate sector with STM experts and professionals. MYSTCC provides training and policy input on strategic trade compliance and governance, supporting the implementation of STA 2010.

MySTS 2023 was organized by the Strategic Trade Secretariat (STS) in collaboration with the U.S. Department of State’s Export Control and Related Border Security Program (EXBS) and the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration. The summit brought together over 600 local and international participants from various sectors, including business, academia, government, and industry organizations.
