Northport Achieves Remarkable Growth in Conventional Cargo Handling in 2023

Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, a member of MMC Group, announced a groundbreaking accomplishment in its conventional cargo segment, handling a record-breaking 11,405,312 Freight Weight Tonnes (FWTs) in 2023, surpassing the previous high of 11,115,670 FWTs in 2022.

Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, CEO of Northport, revealed this milestone during the New Year 2024 countdown event.

Northport – remarkable achievement

The remarkable achievement was attributed to a 2.6% increase over the previous year, primarily driven by a significant rise in break bulk commodities, marking a 9.5% growth. Additionally, the dry bulk and liquid bulk segments experienced increases.

The Roll-on Roll-off (RoRo) segment saw a substantial uptick in handling Electric Vehicle (EV) cars, aligned with government policies promoting electric vehicles.

Despite global economic challenges and trade uncertainties, Northport navigated a successful year. Adverse weather conditions, particularly during the rainy season in the last quarter, posed challenges to conventional cargo operations. Overcoming these hurdles made the achievement even more significant since conventional cargo operations are typically halted during rainfall.

Monthly record

Notably, Northport set a monthly throughput record in October, handling 1,129,145 FWTs, surpassing its previous best of 1,078,538 FWTs in May 2022. This success coincided with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of port operations at the North Port terminal on December 27, 2023.

“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of our dedicated employees, whose unwavering commitment and hard work have been the driving force behind our success. We also extend our sincere appreciation to our customers, contractors and stakeholders for their significant support, making 2023 yet another successful year for Northport.

“This back-to-back record-breaking achievement will continue to inspire and drive us towards even greater successes for Northport”, express Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport.
