The original prototype of the iconic Birkin handbag, sketched on an air sickness bag for Jane Birkin, sold for a record-breaking €8.6 million (RM42.8 million) at a Sotheby’s auction in Paris, making it the second most valuable fashion item ever sold at auction. The winning bidder, from Japan, secured the bag after a fierce bidding war that began at €1 million. This sale far surpasses the previous handbag auction record set in 2021.
“The most famous bag of all time,” the auctioneer declared, calling it “totally unique.”
