Original Birkin Bag Sells for RM42.8 million, Becomes Second Most Valuable Fashion Item in History

The original prototype of the iconic Birkin handbag, sketched on an air sickness bag for Jane Birkin, sold for a record-breaking €8.6 million (RM42.8 million) at a Sotheby’s auction in Paris, making it the second most valuable fashion item ever sold at auction. The winning bidder, from Japan, secured the bag after a fierce bidding war that began at €1 million. This sale far surpasses the previous handbag auction record set in 2021.
