Five practical cybersecurity strategies to manage stress

By Karthick Chandrasekar, Associate Director, ManageEngine

Identity security, malicious insiders, ransomware attacks, and social engineering attacks are considered
the top three threats that IT resources and identities need to be protected from, according to
ManageEngine’s latest Malaysia survey on identity security.

The Cyber999 Incident Response Centre further reported that a total of 1,536 incidents occurred in Q4
of 2023. In contrast, 1,555 events were reported in Q1 of 2024, representing a 1% rise in incidents over
Q4 of 2023.

Organisations need to employ strategies that prioritise security and well-being in order to maintain a
calm and considerate attitude to cybersecurity. Consider these strategies to create a stress-free
cybersecurity environment.

Cybersecurity strategies

  1. Encouraging users’ empowerment and education In a world dominated by technological breakthroughs, education and awareness are critical to maintaining digital security.
Encourage everyone to understand the importance of cybersecurity in their personal and professional lives by sharing best practices and information about cybersecurity threats.
Organise frequent, interactive, and instructional training sessions to provide users with the skills they need to navigate the digital world securely. This empowerment may mitigate any ignorance,
indifference, or fear regarding the risks associated with using the internet.
  2. Installing security measures that are easy to utilise Cybersecurity is being revolutionised by AI, which is increasing threat detection, automating responses, and upgrading overall security management.

ManageEngine survey

The ManageEngine survey also revealed that Malaysian respondents believe AI deepfakes will be an alarming threat, due to their ability to mimic and to become more realistic in the future. Organisations can strengthen their defences against the changing cyberthreat landscape by keeping up with these trends and using proactive solutions.

Large data sets can be analysed by AI systems in real time to find patterns and abnormalities that might
point to security risks, enabling quicker and more precise threat detection and response.

Organisations need to ensure that their security measures don’t hinder productivity or cause needless
worry by utilising practices that are both effective and practical. Use security-enhancing (but non-
frustrating) tools like secure communication platforms, MFA, and password managers.

Security-enhancing tools

  1. Promoting harmony between life, work, and technology Emphasize the need to set boundaries between one’s personal and professional lives and the importance of unplugging digital gadgets during non-peak hours. Reducing one’s online presence can contribute to a higher quality of life. Doing so has advantages for your health in addition to lowering your risk of becoming a target of cyberattacks.
  2. Regularly patching and updating systems
Provide a schedule for patch management and system updates, and educate users on the importance of keeping up-to-date software versions in order to ward off emerging threats. Whenever possible, automate update procedures to lessen the need for user participation. This relieves the burden of having to update manually and monitor systems on a regular basis.
  3. Encouraging open communication
Provide an environment where people can report security incidents or issues without worrying about punishment or reprisal. The knowledge that there is always a channel available for reporting issues can help to lessen the anxiety that accompanies cybersecurity incidents. It promotes cooperation and maintains a secure atmosphere.

Thoughtful cybersecurity

Implementing these tactics will help organisations understand that cybersecurity is a holistic process that involves both the digital world and our daily decisions rather than just a technical safety measure. By integrating these practices into their digital lives, organisations not only fortify their defences against cyberthreats but also cultivate a harmonious relationship between security and peace of mind.

Thoughtful cybersecurity should be the compass that helps confidently traverse the digital environment
in a world overflowing with technological complexity. Implementing these techniques can create the
groundwork for a safe and stress-free life, enabling organisations to enjoy the benefits of the digital age
without sacrificing our well-being.
