PTPTN loans for poor students to be converted into scholarships next year
KUALA LUMPUR — Beginning next year, National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loans for students from poor and hardcore poor families, identified through e-Kasih data, will be converted into full scholarships.
PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Rahim said the initiative, announced under Budget 2026, reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive higher education and the welfare of low-income families.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier announced that 5,800 students from poor families pursuing studies at public universities will benefit, with RM120 million allocated annually.
Additionally, graduates from low- and middle-income families earning first-class honours will be exempted from PTPTN loan repayments, involving RM90 million yearly.
Norliza said the move encourages academic excellence while maintaining fund sustainability. She added that targeted travel restrictions will apply to defaulters working abroad to ensure repayment continuity.
