Ringgit Weakened in Feb
The ringgit wrapped up Monday a touch weaker against the US dollar, closing at 4.0580/0625 compared to Friday’s 4.0470/0535, as investors adopted a wait-and-see approach heading into the new year. With a holiday-shortened week and no major economic catalysts on the horizon, trading remained quiet across the board.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama that subdued activity is typical this time of year. He also highlighted ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts extending into 2026, which could sway credit rating agencies’ views. The psychological RM4.00 level, he added, will likely remain a tough barrier for the ringgit next year.
The local currency also softened against most major peers, including the Japanese yen (2.5956/5987), British pound (5.4742/4803), and euro (4.7787/7840). Against ASEAN currencies, it mostly edged lower, except for a slight gain versus the Thai baht.
