Sarawak-Singapore Power Link Gains Conditional Approval, Boosting Asean Energy Integration
The Sarawak-Singapore Interconnection Project has received Conditional Approval (CA) from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA), marking a major step in regional energy integration under the Asean framework. The approval, awarded to a consortium led by Sarawak Energy and Sembcorp Utilities, confirms the project’s initial technical and commercial feasibility. Once completed, the interconnection will enable the export of about 1GW of renewable energy from Sarawak to Singapore, with supply expected to begin by 2035 or earlier.
The letter of approval was handed over in a ceremony witnessed by Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg. Abang Johari said the project supports the vision of an Asean Power Grid and Sarawak’s Borneo Grid initiative. Sarawak Energy chairman Datuk Ibrahim Baki added that the venture will advance regional energy security and sustainability.
