Singapore Boosts Nuclear Safety Research with S$66 Million Grant, New NUS Facility

Singapore’s Nuclear Research and Safety Institute (SNRSI) has received a S$66 million (US$52 million) grant under the RIE2025 plan to expand research into nuclear safety. The institute unveiled its new 12,900 sqm premises at NUS on July 11. While Singapore has not decided on deploying nuclear energy, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said the government will study its potential, especially small modular reactors (SMRs), which are safer and more feasible for Singapore. Chairman of the National Research Foundation Heng Swee Keat emphasised that nuclear safety remains a strategic priority, given regional developments, with countries like the Philippines and Indonesia planning nuclear deployment by the 2030s and 2040s. SNRSI’s research will cover reactor safety, radiation impacts, radioactive spread, and nuclear policy, contributing to regional safety frameworks and preparedness for future nuclear developments.
