Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said expanding the Sales and Service Tax (SST) scope is targeted to control cascading price effects without burdening the people.
“We can control the cascading effect… we also had a bubble system and there was no effect,” he said, noting inflation remained at 2% last year.
He stressed that SST expansion only covers some goods, not basic necessities, and is implemented selectively:
“If we choose the right segment and it reaches the right target, then what we are doing is a better way.”
Revenue from SST helps fund assistance like Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA), which expanded to 5.4 million recipients. Amir Hamzah also confirmed RON95 subsidy rationalisation is under Cabinet discussion and will roll out before year-end.
