Starmer Eyes China Visit to Revive “Golden Era” Ties Amid European Re-engagement Push

LONDON/BEIJING — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to visit Beijing next week in a bid to revive the “golden era” of UK-China relations, Reuters reported, citing sources familiar with the matter. The trip would mark the first by a British leader since 2018 and feature a revamped UK-China CEO Council, bringing top executives from both nations together for high-level business dialogue.Negotiations for the council—first conceived during the warmer 2018 period—have been ongoing, though its final English name remains under discussion.

Chinese experts view the potential visit as part of a broader European recalibration toward Beijing, driven by mounting domestic economic pressures, sluggish growth, and shifting global geopolitics.

Starmer Eyes China Visit

Zhao Chen of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences noted that recent moves by France’s Emmanuel Macron and reported plans by Germany’s Friedrich Merz reflect European powers seeking stable ties with China amid diversified international dynamics. The UK’s recent approval of China’s new London embassy site has removed a key obstacle, paving the way for progress.Since taking office in 2024,

Starmer has softened the confrontational tone inherited from Conservative predecessors, emphasizing economic cooperation. Trade remains the cornerstone of bilateral relations, and reinforcing this foundation is seen as vital for long-term stability. In December 2025, Starmer described China as a “defining force” in technology, trade, and global governance, warning that failing to engage would be a “dereliction of duty.”

Transatlantic strains

While recent steps are positive, analysts caution that deep-seated issues—particularly Labour’s positions on sensitive topics—persist, requiring sustained effort for a true return to the golden era. China’s Foreign Ministry welcomed potential exchanges but offered no confirmation of the visit.

The initiative unfolds against transatlantic strains, including US President Trump’s Greenland-related tariff threats, which Starmer firmly rejected, highlighting growing UK-US divergences and adding strategic context to any Beijing outreach.
