US Escalates Tech Tensions with China. Revokes Huawei Export Licenses

The Biden administration has revoked export licenses that allowed Intel and Qualcomm to supply Huawei with semiconductors. This move further tightens export restrictions against the Chinese telecom equipment maker.

The US government did not specify which permits were canceled, but it follows Huawei’s release of an AI-enabled computer powered by an Intel chip. American chip maker Intel declined to comment on the matter.

Background on Huawei’s Restrictions

Since 2019, the US has restricted technology exports, including computer chips, to Huawei. The restrictions were imposed due to alleged ties between Huawei and the Chinese military. Huawei was added to a so-called “entity list,” requiring US companies to obtain licenses for exporting certain technologies to the company.

Licenses were previously granted to some US companies (including Intel and Qualcomm) to supply non-5G-related technology to Huawei.

    Huawei’s Resurgence and Challenges

Despite trade restrictions, Huawei has experienced a resurgence, especially after launching the Mate 60 Pro smartphone.

However, the recent license revocations pose significant challenges for the company. The US has imposed restrictions on several Chinese technology firms, reflecting heightened tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
