President Donald Trump urged Apple CEO Tim Cook to avoid expanding manufacturing in India, arguing it was a way to bypass U.S. tariffs on Chinese-made goods. As Apple diversifies production to India and Vietnam, Trump temporarily imposed 145% tariffs on China, later reducing them to 30% after negotiations.
Unfortunately for the South Asian nation, despite offering a zero tariff deal to the United States, the opposite desired effect is taking place. Furthermore, it comes as a shock to many social media users that this rash announcement was made.
Others joked that the Trump administration should “nationalise” Apple as he is enforcing the manufacturing process to the company. It will be a costly venture, a large financial commitment for Apple to fully manufacture all their products in the United states. This is despite Apple committing $500 billion to U.S. infrastructure.
Redditors mentioned that Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO himself mentioned that there is a lack of skilled labour in the United States to mass produce technological products.
It could possibly be the spell of an iPhone costing $10,000 out of the box. As it is, the company appears to be less innovative than their competitors for offering basically the same phone for the last five years.
