WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is signaling a renewed willingness to negotiate a health care deal with Democrats, even as the federal government shutdown drags into its second week with no clear resolution in sight.
Trump has suggested he is open to discussions on extending federal subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which helped millions afford private insurance. “I want great health care for the people,” he said, though his tone shifted hours later, insisting that the government must reopen first.
The impasse in Congress centers on whether to fund health insurance subsidies immediately or delay action until after the shutdown. Democrats are pressing to prevent looming premium hikes, while Republicans argue the issue can wait.
Behind the scenes, a bipartisan group of senators — including Maine’s Susan Collins — are quietly exploring possible compromises. Still, both parties remain entrenched, with Senate votes repeatedly failing and public frustration mounting as government services remain frozen.
