KUALA LUMPUR: The July Dewan Rakyat sitting has adjourned without the Urban Renewal Bill being put to a vote, with debates and voting set to resume in October.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, who tabled the Bill for its second reading, said it was presented to the National Council for Local Government on Aug 20 and received unanimous agreement from state representatives, including opposition-led states.
Nga clarified that urban renewal areas are identified and gazetted by state governments, not the Federal Government. For example, Terengganu has listed 22 sites, Kedah 55, and Kelantan four. He added that some gazettes, such as Kuala Terengganu’s, date back to 2015.
The Bill also underwent review by the Parliamentary Special Select Committee.
