NEW YORK — Wall Street indexes pulled back sharply overnight as a relentless surge in benchmark government bond yields rattled market sentiment and revived fears of prolonged central bank tightening. The S&P 500 dropped 0.75%, the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1.13%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 0.68%.
Wall Street Slump
Market anxiety intensified as the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield climbed to 5.14%, reaching its highest level since July 2007. The sudden surge in borrowing costs dampened appetite for risk assets across international exchanges. In commodity markets, Brent crude reversed five consecutive sessions of losses to rebound 4.83% to US$103.31 per barrel, driven by escalating geopolitical developments surrounding the U.S.-Iran conflict.
European equities tracked global weakness, with the STOXX Europe 600 slipping 0.44%. Asian bourses presented a mixed picture; South Korea’s Kospi gained 0.90%, whereas the Hang Seng Index lost 1.01% and the Shanghai Composite eased 0.39%. Global investors now turn their focus to the upcoming summit between U.S. and Chinese leaders, seeking policy clarity on trade, artificial intelligence, and critical mineral supply chains.
