The proposal for a comprehensive audit of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) following a restructuring involving the termination of 5,000 contract workers has received various reactions from Malaysian political leaders. Shah Alam Member of Parliament, Azli Yusof, supports the proposal provided it is conducted transparently and professionally to avoid damaging Petronas’ reputation and investor confidence in the national oil and gas company, which operates globally. He stressed that third-party audits must not be politicized and any significant findings should be presented to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
Earlier, UMNO Youth Chief, Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, urged a thorough audit of Petronas to ensure the “rightsizing” decision, which affects 10% of its 50,000 workforce, is carried out transparently and based on genuine needs. Commenting further, Azli suggested the establishment of a Special Parliamentary Select Committee to monitor the governance of government-linked companies (GLCs) like Petronas, ensuring major decisions align with the interests of the people and the nation, while emphasizing that the public has the right to know without interfering with the company’s operations.
