On June 22, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet announced a halt to all fuel and gas imports from Thailand, effective midnight, due to an escalating border dispute triggered by a Cambodian soldier’s death in May in the Emerald Triangle. Cambodia closed two border crossings in retaliation to Thailand’s checkpoint restrictions.
Both nations issued travel warnings. The spat caused political turmoil in Thailand after a leaked call between Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Cambodia’s Hun Sen led to coalition fallout. Cambodia, reliant on Thailand for 27% of its 2022 fuel imports, plans to source fuel elsewhere. – AFP
