Cambodia Blames Thailand for Failed Ceasefire Despite Malaysia’s Mediation Effort
PHNOM PENH – Cambodia has accused Thailand of reversing its agreement to a ceasefire proposed by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim amid escalating border clashes. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said Anwar called him on July 24 to propose an immediate ceasefire after speaking with Thai leaders. Cambodia agreed, clarifying it did not initiate the conflict. However, just over an hour later, Thailand allegedly withdrew from the agreed ceasefire. Cambodia insists the key to ending hostilities lies in Thailand’s genuine willingness to halt attacks. The clashes, centred along Preah Vihear Temple, have raised regional concerns as ASEAN urges calm.
Thailand’s Air Force launched two waves of airstrikes using F-16 fighter jets on Cambodian military targets near Preah Vihear Temple, Ta Muen Thom, and Phu Makua on Friday, in retaliation for Cambodian attacks on Thai civilian homes and hospitals. The first wave involved four jets hitting two targets, while the second wave saw two jets strike two more targets, with all aircraft returning safely. The Royal Thai Air Force said the Battlefield Air Interdiction missions aimed to neutralise positions used to launch attacks on civilians. Thailand condemned Cambodia’s use of heavy weaponry and called the strikes a necessary tactical response.
