SIA Posts Record S$2.78B Profit Amid Merger Gains, Competition Challenges
Travel between Singapore and Malaysia is reaching peak prices ahead of Chinese New Year 2026, with airfares, bus tickets, and train services in high demand. Return flights to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, and Ipoh now cost between $420 and $1,245, compared with $99 to $345 the week before, reflecting the surge in passenger demand.
Bus fares have also increased, with trips to Kuala Lumpur priced at $89 to $276 and to Penang or Ipoh up to $370, while operators like Causeway Link prepare backup buses to handle crowds.
The recently launched Electric Train Service (ETS) from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh is fully booked for much of the peak period, with passengers like Justin K paying higher fares and extending travel dates to secure tickets.
Travelers are also using creative alternatives, such as taking multiple buses via Johor Bahru to reduce costs, with journeys costing as little as $8.
Airlines like AirAsia have added over 7,500 seats on flights to accommodate demand, while passengers continue booking early to avoid inflated prices, prioritizing comfort, punctuality, and reduced travel time over cost during the festive period.
