Coalition Partner Urges MADANI to Adopt Realistic Stamp Duty Reforms
MCA vice-president Lawrence Low proposed modernizing Malaysia’s employment contract stamp duty to align with current economic realities. He suggested raising the exemption threshold from RM300 to RM3,000 per month, matching the personal income tax exemption, to ease the burden on low-income contracts. Low also recommended a gradual 10-15% annual increase in the threshold, reflecting salary trends and market conditions. He criticized the outdated Stamp Act 1949, noting its disconnect from modern business needs. Additionally, Low called for an improved e-Stamping platform, integration with Socso and EPF, and exemptions or simplified compliance for small businesses to reduce administrative burdens.
