Starting Jan 1, 2026, all employment contracts in Malaysia must be stamped, the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) announced. This move aligns with the phased rollout of the Stamp Duty Self-Assessment System under Budget 2025. A stamp duty of RM10 will apply per contract, as required under the Stamp Act 1949. Contracts signed before Jan 1, 2024, are exempt. Those signed between Jan 1 and Dec 31, 2024, must still be stamped but will not incur late penalties if done before year-end. LHDN urges employers to review and update contracts to ensure compliance and avoid penalties.
