The European Union is preparing to impose retaliatory tariffs on €100 billion (£84.7 billion) of US goods if trade talks with the Trump administration fail. The EU could share these plans with member states as early as Wednesday, with a month-long consultation to follow. This response comes as the EU faces potential US tariffs on pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, critical minerals, lumber, and trucks, which could generate €100 billion from EU companies.
EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic emphasized the bloc’s resilience, stating it won’t accept an unfair deal. Meanwhile, China’s Xi Jinping urged the EU to resist “bullying” and positioned China as a reliable trade partner, confirming the suspension of sanctions on some European politicians. Current US tariffs cover 70% of EU goods exports, potentially rising to 97% if new tariffs are enacted after Trump’s 90-day pause expires.
