Malaysian Government Orders Telcos to Hand Over Detailed Phone and Internet Data Amid Privacy Concerns

The Malaysian government, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), has reportedly ordered telecommunications companies to provide detailed phone call and internet usage records for January to March 2025 as part of a “Mobile Phone Data” project. The data requested includes call logs, IP call records, and location details. Non-compliance could result in a RM20,000 fine or six months’ imprisonment under the Communications and Multimedia Act. This directive raises concerns about data privacy and security, especially amid recent incidents like the hacking of the Home Minister’s WhatsApp account and exposed sensitive data from government servers. The MCMC has not yet responded to inquiries about the initiative’s transparency and accountability.
