PETALING JAYA: The Health Ministry will phase out the contract system for medical officers as part of efforts to resolve Malaysia’s healthcare staffing crisis, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad.
He acknowledged the long-standing human resource challenges, citing declining medical graduate numbers and uneven workforce distribution nationwide. To address these issues, Dzulkefly outlined reforms beyond temporary fixes, including mandatory mobilisation for fairer distribution, streamlined house officer training for quicker integration, and improved welfare for healthcare workers.
“I welcome healthy debate on this subject matter. Constructive feedback is crucial to enhance our public healthcare system and delivery, and to meet the unmet expectations of the rakyat,” he said in a statement on X.
Concerns over staff shortages were recently raised by MPs regarding Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital in Klang, while Johor’s Sultanah Aminah Hospital also reported critical manpower gaps.
