On March 21, 2025, a massive fire at an electrical substation near London’s Heathrow Airport caused a significant power outage, forcing the closure of Europe’s busiest airport for the entire day. The blaze, which broke out late Thursday night at the North Hyde Electricity Substation in Hayes, west London, led to the cancellation or diversion of over 1,350 flights, affecting more than 200,000 passengers worldwide.
The London Fire Brigade deployed 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines to tackle the inferno, evacuating 150 people and leaving thousands of nearby homes without power. Heathrow officials announced the closure would last until 11:59 PM, with disruptions expected to linger for days. Passengers were advised not to travel to the airport, as flights were redirected to alternate hubs like Gatwick, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt.
The UK’s Energy Secretary, Ed Miliband, called the incident “catastrophic,” noting even the backup generator was damaged. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, sparking questions about the resilience of critical infrastructure.
