India has banned imports from Pakistan, escalating tensions after a militant attack killed 26 tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam area. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade cited national security for the immediate ban. Both nations claim the Muslim-majority Himalayan region, a longstanding flashpoint for wars and insurgency. India accuses Pakistan of orchestrating the attack, a claim Islamabad denies. Pakistan, alleging Indian military plans, halted border trade, closed airspace to Indian flights, and expelled diplomats. It also warned that blocking river water under a historic treaty would be an act of war. Trade between the nuclear-armed neighbors has significantly declined in recent years.
