Kaspersky Uncovers Coinbase Phishing Campaign Exploiting Windows Users
SINGAPORE, Oct 2 – Cybersecurity firm Kaspersky has uncovered a phishing campaign targeting Coinbase users, with attackers attempting to steal login credentials and cryptocurrency funds. The scheme begins with emails directing victims to view a supposed Coinbase account statement, which can only be accessed via Windows desktops or laptops. Once downloaded and opened, the file secretly installs remote access software, giving attackers full control over the victim’s device.
The attackers then prompt users to log in to their Coinbase accounts, exposing usernames and passwords. This enables hackers to drain funds or lock users out of their accounts entirely.
Kaspersky’s Senior Web Content Analyst, Olga Altukhova, said the campaign highlights how cybercriminals exploit trusted platforms. She urged users to always verify links and files, warning that legitimate services would never demand downloads limited to specific operating systems.
Kaspersky advises using verified security solutions, avoiding suspicious downloads, and never sharing sensitive details with untrusted sources.
