Singapore Moves to Preserve Lee Kuan Yew’s 38 Oxley Road Home as National Monument
SINGAPORE – The Singapore Government plans to gazette the late founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew’s family home at 38 Oxley Road as a national monument. The National Heritage Board (NHB) and Singapore Land Authority announced on Nov 3 that the site has been assessed by the Preservation of Sites and Monuments (PSM) Advisory Board as being of “strong national significance and great historic merit.
” If preserved, the Government intends to acquire the property and convert it into a public heritage park, ensuring it cannot be redeveloped for private use. Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo accepted the board’s recommendation. Mr Lee Hsien Yang, the property’s owner, has until Nov 17 to file objections under the Preservation of Monuments Act. Authorities said a detailed study will follow to determine how best to safeguard the site while respecting Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s wishes.
