Najib Razak’s House Arrest Bid: A Setback for Malaysia’s Anti-Corruption Battle
PUTRAJAYA: The High Court was told that Datuk Seri Najib Razak was the biggest beneficiary of RM2.28bil misappropriated from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib submitted that Najib’s subordinates, including former 1MDB CEO Datuk Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halmi and general counsel Jasmine Loo, acted under his authority. The prosecution maintained that Najib had ultimate power as prime minister, finance minister, and 1MDB board of advisors’ chairman.
Ahmad Akram argued that despite multiple red flags, Najib failed to act against fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low), indicating complicity. He said Najib ultimately benefited by retaining political power and control over the company.
Najib faces four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering linked to 1MDB. He is currently serving a prison term for a separate SRC International case. The hearing continues before Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah.
