SINGAPORE, June 14, 2024 – CropLife Asia and the EU-ASEAN Business Council have released a report titled “Report on ASEAN Food Systems Sustainability,” stemming from the ASEAN Food Systems Sustainability Workshop held in Jakarta in November 2023. The report analyzes challenges and opportunities in Southeast Asia’s agriculture, emphasizing the need for region-specific solutions amid global sustainability trends.
Dr. Siang Hee Tan, Executive Director of CropLife Asia, stressed the importance of balancing increased productivity with environmental protection and economic viability for smallholder farmers. The report highlights the rising population and food demand in Southeast Asia, predicting an increase of nearly 30 million people by 2030. It also addresses the impact of climate change on agriculture, including lower yields and increased risks from extreme weather events.
Chris Humphrey, Executive Director of the EU-ASEAN Business Council, emphasized the importance of food security, nutritional value, and rural incomes, all while protecting the natural environment. The report discusses the implications of the EU Green Deal on ASEAN and the potential benefits of agricultural innovations such as digital solutions, efficient farming techniques, and gene-editing technologies.
