Expect repercussions for both the US and its victims in tariff warfare
Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow vowed to counter the impact of new U.S. tariffs by empowering local enterprises and strengthening supply chains. Speaking at the Penang Aidilfitri Madani 2025 Celebration at PICCA Convention Centre, attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and key ministers, Chow emphasized proactive measures to sustain Penang’s economic growth.
He highlighted Penang’s robust trade with the U.S., its second-largest export market in 2023, contributing RM76 billion (17% of total exports) and a RM57.7 billion trade surplus. Despite leading national exports in February 2025 with RM9.3 billion, Chow warned that U.S. tariffs could disrupt this momentum.
“We must take aggressive steps to ensure resilience,” he said, committing to align policies with current needs to safeguard Penang’s economic and social development against global trade challenges.
