Malaysia’s position in the global LNG market is set to strengthen as Petronas increases international investments. According to BMI Country Risk & Industry Research, Malaysia is enhancing its global LNG presence with strategic overseas projects.
Petronas, in collaboration with Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), has introduced a private 5G network at its Bintulu LNG Complex, one of the largest LNG plants globally with a production capacity of 29.8 million tonnes annually. This private network aims to leverage 5G for improved operational efficiency and increased revenue opportunities.

BMI’s report highlights the growing importance of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in Malaysia’s oil and gas sector. Machine-to-machine (M2M) connections are projected to grow from 1.62 million in 2024 to 3 million by 2033, driven by IoT innovations. These technologies, including sensors and AI, are expected to enhance production efficiency, automate operations, and minimize downtime.
Key benefits include real-time data collection for reservoir management, equipment monitoring, and refining operations. IoT integration is also improving performance optimization, emissions control, and safety through automation and remote operations.
