PLUS Launches Malaysia's First ANPR Open-Payment Toll Pilot on North-South Expressway
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 9 — PLUS Malaysia Berhad has rolled out Malaysia’s first Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) open-payment tolling pilot, granting selected private vehicle users “lane freedom” on the North-South Expressway.
The initiative covers a 87.7km section from Hutan Kampung to Sungai Dua, spanning nine toll plazas including Alor Setar Utara/Selatan, Gurun and Sungai Petani Utara/Selatan.
ANPR cameras capture vehicle plates, automatically deducting tolls via the JustGO Malaysia app linked to debit/credit cards—no extra devices or upfront costs required.
Supported by AI and machine learning, the system adapts to rain, varying speeds and non-standard plates. Future additions include e-wallets.
PLUS aims to reduce congestion and unsafe lane changes. Existing Touch ‘n Go, SmartTAG and RFID remain valid. Testing since September 2024 showed faster detection; barriers stay during pilot, with advised speeds of 20-25km/h. Photo for display only
