Sanae Takaichi to Become Japan’s First Female Prime Minister After Winning LDP Leadership
TOKYO – Japan is poised to appoint its first female prime minister after the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) elected Sanae Takaichi as its new leader.
Takaichi, a conservative politician inspired by Margaret Thatcher, won a run-off vote against Shinjiro Koizumi, son of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi. Her victory follows Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s resignation after leading the party into minority government amid poor election results.
In her acceptance speech, Takaichi vowed to restore public trust, strengthen Japan’s role in the Indo-Pacific, and tackle rising living costs. “I too will abandon work-life balance. I shall work, work, work,” she declared.
Takaichi’s leadership marks a historic moment in Japanese politics, as she pledges to create a “spirited and vibrant” LDP. Her appointment as prime minister now awaits parliamentary approval.
